Bio: Carlos Rodriguez Garrido is an advertising, beauty, and editorial photographer based in Monterrey, Mexico.
For this shoot I wanted to do something fresh and energetic, so I gathered my team and told them what I had in mind, after coming up with the main idea I created a color scheme that could work with the type of lighting I wanted for the shot. My concept was to create something beautiful with soft lighting that portrayed the beauty of the model, all while evoking hot summer nights, with fresh and glossy makeup, bright colors, etc. Based on that I started looking for a model that portrayed the vibe I was after.
The two key pieces of gear I worked with were a Nikon D850 camera to capture the image and the TetherPro USB cables make everything easier by letting me be able to look at and take care of details right on the spot.
The whole gear I used was: Nikon D850 with Nikon 105mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, Mac Mini, TetherPro USB-C to 3.0 Micro-B Right Angle, TetherPro USB 3.0 to Female Active Extension, JerkStopper Extension Lock, TetherBoost Pro USB 3.0 Core Controller. I used Capture One to develop from RAW and Dodge & Burn in Photoshop to edit.
For lighting, I used two Profoto D2 lights, one as a main light source upfront, and a second one in the back to give volume and create a light outline, as well as two deep umbrellas of 53” from Westcott lighting.
Shooting tethered helped me to see the image with better resolution, see how the clothes are looking, if there is something wrong with the makeup, the model’s expression, lighting, etc. It’s also a great tool for everyone involved, by looking at the image in real time they can get an idea of how the ending result it’s going to look.
A model agent that helped me get in touch with the model, hair and makeup artists that came up with different styles that complemented the outfits, and a fashion stylist who was in charge of creating fun and vibrant looks.
