Blog post by Frank Doorhof
I’m really passionate about my work. Photographing models and celebrities, getting the real characters of people is the most important thing for me. I also love teaching, inspiring people and helping them to get better results from their photo shoots by showing them how light, composition and models come together for a successful shoot.
My workshops are mostly taught in our studio in Emmeloord but you can also find me demoing and teaching at tradeshows and online you can find a lot of our instructional videos. Our video podcast “The DOORhof is always open” features interviews with photographers, videographers and other interesting people we meet during our travels.
My book, Mastering the Model Shoot, was edited by Scott Kelby himself and takes you through every step for a successful model photography workflow, which has never been done, so complete, before in a book (or video). Finding a model, setting up lights, coaching models, contracts, Photoshop, locations and way more… it’s all in the book. Including a step-by-step tutorial on how I create certain looks.
My parents and grandparents have always been keen amateur photographers. They owned their own darkroom, so I practically grew up with photography and film. When digital cameras where introduced I stood in line to buy one and I was really hungry to learn more. So, I started looking in magazines and on the internet for instructional DVDs.
Unfortunately, most at the them were either very expensive or boring. As an experiment, I decided to make one myself. Years later, we have a series of 8 DVDs in English and Dutch. Topics include lighting, big and small flash, day-to-night and much more.
At the moment I’m working on the next DVD with very special locations in United Kingdom, where we do a workshop tour every year that’s organized by Elinchrom. So make sure to check that one out when it’s released!
