USB Tethering Distances for the Canon 5Ds & 5Ds R

The testing continues here in the Tether Tools Studio. With all the issues regarding tethering with USB 3.0, we wanted to run the new Canon 5Ds through a series of tests to see if it experiences the same problems. We tested various cable lengths with and without the Tether Tools TetherBoost to see where exactly it would fail.

Our setup consisted of the following:

Here’s what we learned:

  • Tethering up to 15′ worked well shooting into the Canon EOS Utility 3 on both the iMac and MacBook Pro.
  • Tethering 31′ with the 15′ cable attached to the 16′ active extension worked for about 3-5 shots before the connection was dropped and we had to restart EOS Utility 3. This is consistent with what many Nikon shooters experience at 15′.
  • Connecting the TetherBoost Core Controller to the 31′ tethered setup fixed the dropped connections. We were able to consistently shoot without dropping connection.
  • Both the Macbook Pro and iMac worked the same.
  • We were not able to test with Adobe Lightroom or Capture One as those products don’t support tethering to this camera yet.

While we only tested this on the Canon 5Ds, presumably the 5Ds R would be exactly the same. We’ll let you know if we hear differently or if we get a 5Ds R to test.
