New product alert – a sneak peek just for our Tether Tools Top 20: Start the New Year off Right contest participants!

You’re the first to hear about our new TetherPro Cables, the first-ever high-visibility line of tethering cables. The TetherPro orange cables are designed to ensure everyone on set sees the connection and doesn’t trip over the cable. The precautionary color helps prevent equipment damage and personal injury. It also makes it super easy to find the cable when it’s stuffed in a bag or drawer.

The USB Male to Mini B cable is the most common connection type for DSLR cameras. USB specifications recommend limiting the length of a regular, passive cable to a maximum of 15 feet (4.6m).  Oftentimes, 15 feet of cable between you and the computer is not enough, so that is where Tether Tools’ Active Extension cables come in.

Active Extension cables provide signal boosts every 16 feet (5m) and are the way to go if you need the distance and reliability for smooth image transfer. One 15-foot passive USB and up to 4 Active 16-foot USB extensions can be daisy chained together for a total distance of 80 feet (24m).  TetherPro high-visibility orange USB cables are available in 15-foot, 5-pin mini-B and 16-foot Active Extensions.

The cable you use depends on the camera and computer ports available with your gear, so check the manufacturer specifications. If you’re not sure which cable you need, Tether Tools offers a cable finder service and we would be happy to help.

Check your ports now, so when you win this contest you can let us know right away which cable to send you!

Share today’s photo, post the name of the camera make and model, and the computer make and model that you’ll be tethered to in today’s shared post and we’ll help you identify your cable options.

Want a tethering cable?  You can win it, and all of the other gear we’ll be adding to the Ultimate Tethered Photography Workstation in our Tether Tools Top 20: Start the New Year off Right Facebook Campaign. Ultimate Tethered Photography Workstation: Manfrotto Magic Arm & Super Clamp Kit

The Manfrotto Magic Arm & Super Clamp Kit is designed to hold fixtures and devices securely in place in a variety of situations. The rotating elbow arm, with a locking lever control at the pivot, means you can position a fixture at just the right height and angle.

In our tethering setups, we use it to attach the Tether Tools Wallee Connect Kit, which we included last Friday. You can attach the Connect to the MagicArm and SuperClamp, then adhere it to a tripod or lightstand so the iPad is always nearby when shooting.

Whether you’re viewing images you’ve just shot, or using the iPad for lighting set ups, shot list, model release forms, or so many other uses, having an iPad nearby comes in handy in so many situations.

Finding ways to incorporate new technology – like the iPad – into your work can be an exciting process. Can you remember the first “gadget” you added to your workflow when you first started out in photography? What was it? How did you learn about it? Do you still use it today? Why or why not?
